International Criminals

New Mexico Finally Cracking Down

The people of the world-famous magnet state of New Mexico are starting to understand that international criminals are coming from all over the planet to obtain New Mexico driver’s licenses and ID cards. Since 2003, untold numbers of non-U.S. citizens have taken advantage of a permissive law that has authorized the issuance of state identity documents to applicants without requiring proof of lawful presence or legal residency.

Feds: Des Plaines man offered to get illegal IDs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- An suburban man faces human smuggling charges after investigators say he placed an ad in a Chicago-area Polish language newspaper, offering to drive illegal immigrants to New Mexico to take advantage of the state's lax driver's license rules.
"Social security not necessary. 100 percent guarantee," read the notice allegedly posted by 32-year-old Jaroslaw Kowalczyk of Des Plaines.
Kowalczyk is accused of driving two Polish immigrants from Chicago to Albuquerque this month, charging them $1,000 each and trying to help them get driver's licenses, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S.

PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff's office raided two Sizzler steak house locations on Saturday in search of up to 23 suspects, with nine suspects being taken into custody when the search warrants were served.

The suspects are believed to be illegal immigrants using false identification to gain employment at the restaurants.

The restaurants are located in Phoenix at 5060 W. Indian School Road and 10469 N. 28th Drive.

In May of last year, deputies received a tip from a former manager who informed them he was asked to leave the company when he was not willing to hire employees who didn't have proper identification. He also told MCSO there were employees who were using false identification to gain employment with the restaurant chain.

FBI says Texas man called al-Qaida his 'brothers'

HOUSTON — A Texas man who pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that he tried to help al-Qaida referred to members of the terrorist group as his "brothers," was eager to prove his dedication to the organization and wanted to die fighting alongside them, according to court documents.

Barry Walter Bujol was arraigned Tuesday on charges he tried to supply al-Qaida with personnel, currency and other items. He was arrested last week after a two-year investigation by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacy ordered Bujol be held without bond until his trial, to be held sometime before the end of summer.
