"Blocking REAL ID Empowers Criminals," DC Examiner (February 18. 2009) examines and refutes the arguments made in favor of a banning compliance with Public Law 109-13 (REAL ID) in Virginia. The letter responds to an earlier, February 12th article entitled, "Virginia's General Assembly Rejects REAL ID Provisions."

Re: “Virginia’s General Assembly rejects REAL ID provisions,” Feb. 12
This article contains more fantasy than fact.
Fact: Public Law 109-13 (REAL ID) sets minimum standards for increasing the physical security of drivers’ licenses and ID cards. It establishes procedures to verify that an applicant is who they say they are and that their documents are genuine.
Fact: Motor vehicle agencies will still maintain control of their own driver record systems and applicants’ data. The reporter’s assertion that REAL ID requires a “national database” is complete fiction.
Fact: REAL ID-compliant licenses will not contain biometric data like fingerprints, retinal scans or DNA samples. While Virginia Del. Bob Marshall and state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli say they’ve struck a blow for privacy, they really struck a blow for the anonymity of criminals and terrorists. Their bills will prohibit the Virginia DMV from using facial recognition, a proven fraud prevention tool, to combat criminals.
